Pre-purchase survey
Independent condition inspection before you commit, with defects, priorities and practical next steps.

Start with the country, exact marina or yard, vessel and purpose of the report. We help structure the assignment and identify suitable independent surveyor options.
Select the country where the vessel is physically located. Flag, registry, insurer or lender acceptance is checked separately when it matters.
Location alone is not enough. Vessel material, size, report purpose, flag requirements and specialist access all affect the selection.

Request this surveyA useful request explains more than the boat and country. Access, operating tests, specialist attendance and the intended use of the report should be clear before a surveyor quotes.
A pre-purchase inspection normally benefits from the vessel being lifted so the underwater hull, appendages, through-hulls and running gear can be examined. Confirm yard timing and costs separately.
A sea trial allows machinery, steering, controls and onboard systems to be observed under operating conditions. Engine diagnostics, oil analysis and specialist testing may require separate attendance.
Sailing rigs, large engines, high-voltage systems, composites, timber, steel and aluminium can require specialist competence or additional testing beyond a general condition survey.
Tell us whether the report is for purchase, insurance, finance, registration, tonnage or commercial use. The intended recipient may set its own scope, qualification or appointment requirements.
Clear information reduces follow-up questions and helps avoid comparing quotations built around different scopes.
We separate physical survey location from flag, insurer, lender or registry acceptance requirements.
Give the country, island, marina or yard and launch status.
Explain purchase, insurance, valuation, damage, finance, flag or commercial needs.
Agree scope, fee, access, credentials and report use directly with the selected surveyor.
These answers explain the practical boundaries between survey location, scope, specialist work and report acceptance.
Yes. Use the international request form on this page. Give the vessel country and exact port, marina or yard so the assignment can be reviewed and routed appropriately.
No. The physical inspection location and the vessel flag are separate. Provide both when the report is intended for registration, tonnage, coding or another formal purpose.
The surveyor’s scope and fee should be confirmed directly. Marina or yard lift charges are normally arranged separately, and availability depends on the vessel and location.
Acceptance must be confirmed for the exact recipient and assignment. Some organisations require a particular report format, qualification, appointment or recognised surveyor list.
Sometimes, but not always. Complex engines, rigs, electrical systems or vessel materials may justify separate specialists. The requested scope should identify these needs before appointment.
You appoint the independent surveyor directly after agreeing the scope, fee, timing, access and terms. Marine Survey International provides information and professional introductions.
